NEWBURYPORT — The pleasure for gyros, lamb shanks and galaktoboureko is building as Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Newburyport prepares to bring its once-a-year Greek Foods Festival back again to Harris Avenue this weekend.
The entertaining begins Friday and operates until eventually Sunday afternoon at 7 Harris St. Hours for the celebration operate from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Harris Street will be shut to autos from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday to make way for reside Greek tunes and dancing by OPA Leisure.
Festival Chairman Jim Sperelakis stated this year’s party is a return to sort immediately after two many years of “Greek To Go” offerings through the top of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

Sperelakis also promised a “plethora” of Greek sweets, such as baklava, sugar cookies (kourembiethes), butter cookies (koulourakia), rice pudding and custard dessert (galaktoboureko).
Church member John Housianitis, who has been volunteering at the competition for many years, mentioned his favorite product is the Greek lasagna (pastichio), which contains ziti, hamburger and béchamel sauce.
“You’ve obtained levels of ziti, layers of hamburger and a product sauce on major,” he explained.
Housianitis mentioned the church hopes to share its society and meals with the Increased Newburyport neighborhood proper prior to the weeklong Yankee Homecoming celebration starts on Sunday.
“This is type of the unofficial kickoff to Yankee Homecoming considering that it is often on the weekend before that gets going,” Housianitis included.
While the pageant is a great way for the church to present off its pastichio, Sperelakis claimed it is also an option to share the members’ tradition with the rest of the community as perfectly.
“We want folks to see what Greek tradition is all about with the band and assembly us and not just grabbing the food to go,” he reported.
The church is also giving socially distanced indoor and outdoor eating, as well as to-go orders this weekend. Housianitis, for one particular, mentioned he is delighted to see the festival returning to ordinary as significantly as it can.
